Wolfsburg, Germany (4E) – Johnny-come-lately the Volkswagen Group will finally launch its own car-sharing service called “WE” that only uses electric vehicles. Rivals Daimler AG and BMW have operated their own on-demand car rental services for several years.
The VW Group will first launch WE in Germany in 2019. It will then expand the car-sharing service to major cities in Europe, North America and Asia starting 2020. The entire WE fleet will consist of electric vehicles..
“We are convinced that the car sharing market still has potential,” said Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales. “That is why we are entering this market with a holistic single-source concept covering all mobility needs from the short journey that takes just a few minutes to the long vacation trip. Our vehicle-on-demand fleets will consist entirely of electric cars, and will therefore provide zero-emission, sustainable mobility. That is an intelligent way to relieve the strain on urban areas.”
VW said WE is designed to do more than car-sharing. The WE vehicle-on-demand platform will eventually include other modes of transportation such as scooters. VW revealed two electric concepts in March: an e-scooter it calls the Streetmate and Cityskater, which is a “last-mile electric street surfer.” Both are called “micro-mobility solutions.”
VW also sees the WE platform connecting to MOIA, its mobility company that launched a ridesharing service with an all-electric shuttle vehicle. The all-electric car is designed to carry six passengers.
VW electric vehicles are already being used by third-party car-sharing services such as Zipcar from Massachusetts, which is acquiring a fleet of over 300 all-electric VW e-Golfs to be available for a car-sharing in London.
VW also revealed the I.D. Concept electric vehicle with the ‘WE’ logo. This vehicles has an NEDC-rated range of 400 to 600 km depending on the battery pack. It will be “about $7,000 to $8,000 cheaper than the (Tesla) Model 3” when the VW electric car launches in 2019-2020.
