Alberta, Calgary, Canada (4E) – The ambitious plans of Canadian ultra low-cost carrier Swoop to start flying passengers in the United States have run into turbulence.
Swoop wanted to begin flying to the United States on Oct 11. This move would have made Swoop the first Canadian ultra low-cost carrier to begin flying to destinations in the USA.
Based in Calgary, Alberta, Swoop has now announced it will fly to its first U.S. destinations on Oct. 27. These flights will fly from Edmonton, Canada to Las Vegas. Six more U.S.-Canada routes were planned by the end of October. These are Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa in Florida, and Phoenix and Mesa in Arizona.
Swoop also said flights to four Mexican and Caribbean destinations were to begin in December 2018 and January 2019. Swoop will use the Boeing 737-800 on its U.S.-Canada flights.
The cause of the two week-long delay: the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hasn’t finished all the regulatory paperwork that would have allowed Swoop to finally fly U.S. skies on the original date.
“We apologize to our travelers affected by the cancellations for the inconvenience and for their disappointment,” said Swoop. “We are focused on doing what is right and are working directly with those affected travelers to provide options including rebooking on an alternate flight or providing full refunds and compensation.”
On August 2, Swoop announced it was to become the first Canadian ultra low-cost airline to fly to the United States, launching its service to Las Vegas, Phoenix (Mesa), Tampa, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale throughout the month of October 2018.
Swoop is a wholly owned subsidiary of WestJet, a low-cost carrier that’s grown to become Canada’s second-biggest airline. Swoop began flying in June to several domestic routes in Canada. The U.S. flights that will begin Oct. 27 are Swoop’s first outside Canada.
Routes switching from WestJet to Swoop are Edmonton-Las Vegas; Hamilton, Ontario-Las Vegas; Hamilton-Orlando and Edmonton-Phoenix/Mesa.
Swoop’s three other planned U.S.-Canada routes are Las Vegas-Abbotsford, British Columbia; Fort Lauderdale-Hamilton and Tampa-Hamilton.
