Los Gatos, CA, United States (4E) – Netflix is finally king of the home entertainment hill. The most popular digital streaming service in the USA finally knocked down cable TV as the most watched TV service in U.S. homes – and will definitely boost its reach.
Netflix was the service of choice for 27.2 percent of respondents to a survey of 2,500 U.S. consumers conducted in May by financial services and research firm, Cowen Inc. Basic cable TV was the favorite of 20.4 percent of respondents while broadcast was preferred by 18.1 percent. YouTube got an 11.4 percent share; Hulu, 5.3 percent and Amazon Prime Video, 4.7 percent.
Netflix’s popularity, however, was more pronounced among younger consumers, or those ages 18 to 34. Among this group, Netflix Number One among the most watched TV services with 39.7 percent of respondents picking it. That huge lead compares to YouTube’s 17 percent and basic cable’s 12.6 percent.
The survey “highlights the importance of Netflix in the home, particularly among millennials,” said John Blackledge, a Cowen analyst. Netflix’s huge and increasing investment in new and original shows and movies “likely ensures (it) the top spot in the living room over time,” noted Blackledge.
As of April, Netflix had 125 million total subscribers worldwide, including 56.7 million in the United States.
