Beijing, China (4E) – China blusters it will go to war to protect every single inch of its territory, which it said includes the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the islands in the South China Sea it illegally seized from other countries like the Philippines and Vietnam.
Minister of National Defense Gen. Wei Fenghe, who was the former commander of the PLA Rocket Forces, vows China will never give up an inch of its territory. “If someone tries to separate Taiwan from China, the Chinese armed forces will take action at any price,” said Wei.
“The islands in the South China Sea have long been China’s territory. They’re the legacy of our ancestors and we can’t afford to lose a single inch of them.”
China won’t surrender its aim to own Taiwan, said Wei. He noted China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
“The Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is a matter of our core interests. It is extremely dangerous to repeatedly challenge China’s bottom line on this question,” he said.
Wei, however, said China’s military ties with the United States are important and sensitive. But he again said Taiwan is a “core” interest and China resolutely opposes displays of strength by “outside forces” (the United States) in the South China Sea.
The U.S. Navy continues staging Freedom of Navigation Operaations (FONOPS) in the South China Sea that infuriate China no end. FONOPS have taken place at the East China Sea and, just this Monday, at the Taiwan Strait separating Taiwan from mainland China.
But after making these threats, Wei seemed to soften.
“The Chinese military will never become a threat to other countries,” claims Wei. “Regardless of our level of development, we will not seek hegemony. We will not engage in any military expansion or arms race.”
China-Taiwan relations have deteriorated since the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen came to power in 2016.
