Hollywood, CA, United States (4E) – As expected, Avengers: Infinity War made $1 billion but in the record time of only 11 days — the fastest movie to hit this massive milestone. And that doesn’t include revenues from China and Russia where the movie opens this week. The question now is when it will get to $2 billion.
In North America, Infinity War made $450.8 million with worldwide revenues amounting to $1.16 billion during the first 11 days of its release. That’s a lot larger than Captain America: Civil War. During its opening weekend, Infinity War, shattered records for the best opening weekend ever, earning over $250 million in the U.S. box office and $630 million worldwide, which is the largest global opening in history.
The movie from Marvel Studios and its parent firm, Walt Disney Studios, also had the second biggest second weekend ever with $112 million behind another Disney hit, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Disney said Infinity War had revenues of $112.5 million from 4,474 locations. This total is almost $1 million higher than Black Panther’s second weekend performance, but some $36.5 million lower than The Force Awakens.
Disney also announced it made more than $3 billion from its 2018 releases, which include both Black Panther and Infinity War.
Avengers: Infinity War is Marvel Studios’ most ambitious movie to date and caps a 10 year-long Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) saga that began in 2008 with the release of Iron Man.
The movie joins Star Wars: The Force Awakens; Star Wars: The Last Jedi; Jurassic World; The Avengers and Black Panther as the only six films in history to cross the $200 million mark in their first weekend. The original Avengers opened with $207.4 million. Black Panther followed hot on its heels with $202 million in February, and continues to break records as its theatrical run continues.
Marvel now has six of the top 10 opening weekends of all time, while parent company Disney holds nine of the top 10. The 19 installments of the MCU have combined to earn about $15.4 billion.
When Infinity War reaches the $2 billion milestone, it will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie to do so. MCU’s top-grossing film is 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers with total receipts exceeding $1.5 billion. Infinity War is expected to easily beat this total.
