Atlanta, GA, United States (4E) – Donald Trump doesn’t know the lyrics of The Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the country he says he wants to make great again. And of which he’s president, by the way.
POTUS proved this in the most embarrassing way possible in front of a live audience of thousands of Americans at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and millions more tuned-in on TV to watch the national championship football game between the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama on Monday.
Trump was caught on camera disrespecting the anthem by mumbling the wrong words, or keeping his mouth shut when he reached those parts he didn’t know the words to.
Many noticed POTUS didn’t sing the entire anthem, which one body language expert found especially interesting given how many times Trump has said the anthem is to be respected and honored.
Social media, especially Twitter, erupted in anger to condemn and mock Trump’s stupidity and hypocrisy. Some on social media said Trump doesn’t know the lyrics to the anthem at all, while others argued Trump’s bungled attempt to sing to the anthem confirms rumors of his dementia and failing mental health.
A few hours before showing-up for the game, however, Trump tweeted: “We are fighting for our farmers, for our country, and for our GREAT AMERICAN FLAG. We want our flag respected – and we want our NATIONAL ANTHEM respected also!”
In a follow-up, he tweeted: “There’s plenty of space for people to express their views and to protest, but we love our flag and we love our anthem and we want to keep it that way.”
Trump has made it a point to condemn African-American players at NFL football games that kneel at the national anthem to protest intractable racism and racial inequality in the U.S. Trump and his fellow right wing bigots choose to see this kneeling as a symbol of disrespect for the country and the United States Armed Forces.
In this context, the revelation Trump doesn’t even known the words to the country’s anthem smacks of high-handed bigotry and a patent disrespect for the flag he purports to love.
The president marched out onto the field with members of the military and the ROTC before the game began and stood to attention with his hand on his heart as the anthem played.
Trump then blundered his way through the lyrics of the anthem.
“That Trump spent months railing against black NFL players peacefully demonstrating during our national anthem, only for it to be shown that he doesn’t even know the words to our national anthem… that really just ties it all up neatly with bow, doesn’t it?” said one tweet.
“Disgraceful for any president, but particularly bad given his months of race-baiting rants against NFL players kneeling to demand justice,” said another.
